the quest for the perfect ERP solution

episode three 'sticky business'
David continues on his quest for the perfect ERP system. In this episode he takes a behind-the-scenes look at sister companies Power Adhesives and Packaging Aids - a world innovator in glue technology. He gets a better understanding of how their ERP system integrates departmental activities, resolves customer issues through Lot Traceability and offers value added services to Power Adhesives customers without adding cost.
Power Adhesives is Europe's leading hotmelt adhesive specialist and its TEC and TECBOND products are among the most extensive ranges of high-quality, competitively priced adhesives and hand held industrial applicators in the world.
Its sister company, Packaging Aids is a sales and distribution organisation that specialises in a vast range of packing-room equipment which it distributes under the Packer brand. Both companies share the same site in Basildon, Essex.
In 2001, Power Adhesives sought a solution that would provide advanced functionality that integrated seamlessly with accounts. Following a visit to K3 Headquarters, Power Adhesives decided that K3's SYSPRO software would clearly provide the essential mix of control, flexibility and information visibility it needed to move forward.
Power Adhesives went live with SYSPRO in 2002 and immediately felt the benefit of SYSPRO's serial number tracking and lot traceability. Mistakes that had become almost routine, faded into history as the company tracked true with accurate information that aligned product serial numbers to customer records.
Power Adhesives is also using the system to print dispatch notes on behalf of its UK customers. This has been welcomed by their clients as a valuable added service and it incurs no extra cost to Power Adhesives.
Their SYSPRO system has also allowed Power Adhesives to share staff across both businesses (Power Adhesives and Packaging Aids). They have dedicated sales teams across each organisation, but they share the same accounts department and their purchasing teams can work across both businesses. This has allowed both businesses to expand without adding to their headcount and they operate leanly and efficiently across both companies.
SYSPRO underpins everything the businesses do and they are currently investigating how they can expand this further with the use of Landed Cost Tracking to gain a clear view of margins on products imported from overseas. They are also recording quality information as an ongoing process in the manufacturing cycle and are looking at how Advanced Quality Management will support this. The features and functionality of the Advanced Warehouse Management module are also being considered to fit in with the way the business runs its warehouse operation.
